Report on the Nashville Rock N Pod Expo by Joe Becht.
The Nashville Rock and Pod Expo took place at the Music Valley Event Center in Nashville, Tn. on Saturday August 26. The venue was literally across the street from the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center and minutes from the world famous Grand Ole Opry. I organize a few events every year and know it is a stressful undertaking. That is why Chris Czynszak from the Decibel Geek Podcast deserves all of the credit in the world for putting the Expo together. His work must have been exhausting as he organized a convention of podcasters as well as an expo featuring guests Mark Slaughter, A list producers Michael Wagnener and Toby Wright and a panel of songwriting professionals including the legendary Walter Egan. As with anything, there are positives and negatives and with this review it is important to focus on the positives because of the value in quality artistic expression.
After making the rounds for 30 minutes, it was quite evident who the professionals were. Talking Metal stands out as a top-notch operation. Mark Strigl, Emily Strigl and John Ostrosky are pros that produce quality entertainment. It was great seeing them in action and also speaking with them. It was engaging and intelligent discourse. If you need proof of why Talking Metal stands head and shoulders above the other podcasts, listen to Emily Strigl’s latest interview with Vernon Reid of Living Colour. No other explanation is needed.
Jon Lamoreux, host of The Hustle podcast, was another fascinating person. If there is any doubt in his professional abilities, drop everything and listen to his interview with Fee Waybill. It by far is one of the most interesting and riveting interviews ever. Jon was an absolute pleasure to meet and speak with.
There is a plethora of KISS podcasts in the universe and many were present at the Nashville Rock and Pod Expo. Esteemed author Julian Gill runs the only one I listen to. KISS FAQ is serious fun and it never ceases to amaze me how they can come up with a topic on KISS every week and keep it fresh. Julian’s writing is incredible. His works include The Odyssey, which is one of the best KISS books ever written and Leppard Tracks, which stands out as an amazing historical documentation on Def Leppard. Julian’s work speaks for itself and it was a wonderful time speaking with him and the KISS FAQ A Team.
As the over used saying goes, “the cream always rises to the top” and it was quite evident at the Nashville Rock and Pod Expo. All in all it was an enjoyable experience and it will be interesting if this will be an annual event. Nashville is a great location and with some tweaking, I believe The Nashville Rock and Pod Expo could reach greater heights.
