According to an article published by USA Today, the death of Chris Cornell has been labeled a suicide by the medical examiner. Here is an excerpt of their article:
“The Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy on 52-year-old Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden musician who died last night in Detroit, the agency’s statement read. “The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide. A full autopsy report has not yet been completed. There is no additional information at this time.
Some of you will remember the death of the late INXS singer Michael Hutchense which was labeled a suicide only to have his partner, Paula Yates, campaign for years before her own death that Hutchence had died due to autoerotic asphyxiation. More than one fan of the late Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple Of The Dog, and solo artist have been mentioning this online, given his lyrics, reasoning that he would never end up committing suicide.
Rumors have circulated all day about his mindset before the show, a source that is reportedly close to the situation spoke to TMZ, and said Cornell’s wife Vicky spoke to him during soundcheck, and that the singer “was not in any way, shape or form in a suicidal state”.
Will we ever find out what took place? One thing is certain, in the last few months Cornell had gone out with Temple Of The Dog, did a one off show with Audioslave, did a bunch of solo shows, and now Soundgarden. He played with essentially every project/band he was a part of. Did he have this planned out? Could he have been hiding depression from his wife and bandmates? Could this be similar to Keith Emerson or Robin William’s death where the singer was aware of some sort of illness that would radically change his life, and thus he felt like death was a better option than suffering? This is obviously a lot of speculation at the moment. We’ll have to wait and see if the full medical examiner’s report sheds more light on what transpired.
