Just when we thought the plot could not thicken any more with the Metallica Grammys issue, it turns out a doctored version of their Moth Into A Flame performance with Lady GaGa has surfaced online. Speculation is that they recorded one of their rehearsals, which is standard practice, or they used a piece of James singing the song live from a recent show. See video at the bottom of this post.
All of this came about when Dave Grohl backed out of a proposed collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest. So the Academy got on the horn, and threw GaGa and Metallica together at the last second. Over the weekend GaGa even went as far as to get a Moth Into Flame back tattoo, which it is yet to be seen if it is real or not, as pictures of the tat do not present any of the signs of a freshly inked tattoo.
If the Jethro Tull debacle 28 years ago was not enough, this performance started out with Laverne Cox not even introing the biggest metal band of all time, before some weird Solid Gold dancers types pranced around supposedly trying to fake a mosh pit. Although sites have mentioned that “James mic broke”, had this of been the case, then you wouldn’t have been able to hear James in the second verse on that very same mic.
So the conspiracy theories are either a stage hand unplugged the mic beneath the stage between the performance and their sound check, one of the dancers unplugged it while faux moshing, or the sound guy just didn’t turn James up.
To further things, Master Of Puppets was played by the house band when Megadeth went up to receive their award for Dystopia. Dave Mustaine’s response to that on twitter was “Ah, you can’t blame ’em for not being able to play MEGADETH.”
